Customer Review: The “Smart About…” series of books are wonderful
My 5, 6 and 8 yr old kids are entranced when I read them the Smart About Art books. After reading one, I came back to Amazon and ordered as many as I could. They are written as a student would write a book report, but are humorous, touching and extremely informative with plenty of examples of the artists’ work. I attended Art School 20+ years ago and it was a refresher course for me as well. It includes background/personal info about the artist, but only as much as a child can comprehend and as it pertains to his art. These books have just the right amount of info on the artists and their work. I wanted to share the world of art with my kids. Though my youngest two still use coloring books and my oldest reads chapter books without illustrations, these Smart About Art picture books are the perfect mix where they all can gain something from them–this series is neither too young nor too advanced. After years of reading picture books, my kids often ask “can that really happen?” or “is that person real?” I wanted a break from the imaginative world of children’s lit and now I’m happy to finally answer “Yes, this person really existed, this really happened!” after reading the Smart About Art books.
Customer Review: Great intro to the artist
My five year old was so inspired reading this that she went to the basement and proceeded to make her own copies of his works. It is nice and simple, but with a decent amount of info and great pics.

Camille and the Sunflowers

Camille and the Sunflowers
“Where Camille lived, the sunflowers grew so high they looked like real suns. . .One day a strange man arrived in Camille’s town. He had a straw hat and a yellow beard.” So begins this fascinating tale of Camille, a little boy who is the son of a small-town postman. Camille meets the man with the yellow beard, and they become friends. This bearded man is a painter named Vincent van Gogh. The story, based on a true-life incident, is beautifully illustrated in full color by the author. This unusual picture storybook will appeal to children who love art-and also to children who simply enjoy a good story.

Customer Review: WELL WRITTEN, WELL ILLUSTRATED AND VERY USEFUL.
This is the type of book that I do wish there were more of. I certainly am not going to go into plot, story-line, etc. here, as other reviewers have done so already and have accomplished it quite well. This story is based on a true encounter with the artist Vincent Van Gogh. This book is a wonderful tool to introduce children to the wonderful artist. It also has some wonderful lesson within it’s pages dealing with acceptance and tolerance of those who are just a bit different than ourselves. The author has done a wonderful job with the text and the illustrations fit perfectly and are very well executed. The story is told through the eyes of a small boy. I have read this to quite a number of classes of children and they have all enjoyed it, which, when you think about it, is a pretty good indorsement for any children’s book. This is certainly one you will want to add to your child’s library.
Customer Review: Beautiful book!
I bought this book for my 6-year-old son, albiet with a little hesitation as to whether or not he would be interested in something like this, since his passions seem to be more with Spiderman, Harry Potter, etc. However he absolutely loves this book! He asks me to read it to him almost every night. And tonight after we finished it, he asked me where we could go to see Van Gogh’s paintings in real life because “I really want to go and see them!” (Hmmm…this could be a good excuse to take a little vacation to Holland!) I am ordering several more of this book for him to give as birthday gifts to his friends and cousins.

Lust for Life

Many of the locations used for filming were the actual places Vincent Van Gogh visited during his life. PLOT SUMMARY: Vincent Van Gogh is the archetypical tortured artistic genius. His obsession with painting, combined with mental illness, propels him through an unhappy life full of failures and unrewarding relationships. He fails at being a preacher to coal miners. He fails in his relationships with women. He earns some respect among his fellow painters, especially Paul Gauguin, but he does not get along with them. He only manages to sell one painting in his lifetime. The one constant good in his life is his brother Theo, who is unwavering in his moral and financial support. [IMDB - John Oswalt] ++++ DVD FEATURES: Officially licensed release from South Korea provides Wide Screen (letterbox) display and Dolby Digital Sound in ENGLISH with optional (removable) Korean subtitles. Includes Filmography. Please be aware that the quality of both the audio and video are subpar; somewhat better than the VHS release, and also widescreen/letterbox format (although the packaging indicates 4:3), but still not the high quality typical of Korean releases.
Used Price: $12.66
Customer Review: If you want to meet Vincent Van Gogh
Forget about the fact that it was made in the 50’s, the quality was restored and the directing is cartoonish; the story is rich, the artist was on an emotional rollercoaster, you get to see a lot of his work (well, some of them are actually reproductions of the paintings in the making) and the it’s starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn, need I say more? Buy the DVD now!

Vincent Van Gogh - A Dutchman

This moving tribute, narrated by Christopher Reeve, examines the sensitive humanitarian soul behind the strange, tragic life of artist Vincent Van Gogh. This program brings to life the passion and artistic genius of the enigmatic artist. Vincent: A Dutchman reveals the gentle, feeling soul beneath the much-publicized violent outbursts, self-mutilation and insanity.

Customer Review: I liked it.
It’s pauperishly produced, but, as art documentaries go, I’ve seen worse. A good quick introduction to Van Gogh, surprisingly comprehensive for a mere 25 minutes of film. I was struck by the sad irony of seeing the youthful Reeves speak of the doom awaiting Vincent.
Customer Review: Not recommended
I got this DVD in anticipation of an upcoming trip to the Netherlands, and was sorely disappointed. The title - ‘A Dutchman’ - was misleading, as it mentioned only in passing Van Gogh’s nationality, instead focusing on his life in France. Most of the documentary consisted of a very bored-looking Christopher Reeve narrating, reading from a teleprompter or cue cards placed about knee-height. You can even see him stifling a burp at one point, and a jump cut in narration was, unfortunately, the highlight of the production (along with the menu screen). Halfway into the documentary, we’d only seen about half a dozen paintings; the rest was Chris. Even though it’s clear that this documentary is aimed at middle-school students, it is unique in that it makes a great artist out to be very dull and uninspiring. I’ve taken art classes in college and slide presentations at eight a.m. were more gripping. Additional caveat: It’s obvious this was sloppily transferred from the VHS original. Not only is the documentary poorly done, it looks terrible too.

The Starry Night (Sternennacht) by Vincent van Gogh

Painted from memory during his stay at the Saint-Remy asylum, many have wondered if the sun, the moon and the eleven stars allude to Joseph’s story in the Old Testament, a symbolic remnant of Van Gogh’s days as a minister.

Vincent: The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh

The most profound exploration of an artist’s soul ever to be put on film (Village Voice), VINCENT: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF VINCENT VAN GOGH is a captivating study of a brilliant artist. One of the Top 10 documentaries the year it was released, Paul Cox’s portrait of Vincent Van Gogh is a journey through the life of a tortured genius who became one of the greatest artists of all time. The story is told through letters written to his brother Theo from 1872 until 1890, eloquently read by actor John Hurt.

    Customer Review: A Little Slow
I watched the DVD but it did not hold my interest as much as I thought it would. The writings of Vincent were read throughout and that was fascinating but the cinematography seemed to be fragmented and although it attempted to show the countryside where Vincent lived and how this inspired him (colors, form, locals), the cut to his paintings was quick and didn’t give me enough opportunity to contemplate the beauty of his pieces. I still would recommend this DVD if you just want a look inside of Vincent’s mind as he unravels to a tragic end.
    Customer Review: Forgettable
I am an Art History teacher and an avid admirer of Vincent Van Gogh. This pseudo-documentary is visually uninteresting and seems more home-made than professional. The actor reading the Van Gogh letters has an irritating voice and a monotonal delivery. The score is un-musical and aimless. I am sorry, but I do not recommend this video to anyone for any reason.

Vincent van Gogh’s paintings are now popular the world over, although few people, apart from his brother Theo, recognized his genius during his lifetime. ‘Visiting Vincent van Gogh‘ takes us to the different places where the Dutch artist lived and worked. The book tells of his turbulent life and shows us how Vincent van Gogh saw the world which he captured in his brightly colored paintings.

Customer Review: A great art book for all ages!
Visiting Van Gogh is not only a great book for kids to simply flip through and look at the pictures, but also for adults and educators. It is written with such imagery that kids and adults alike feel they actually hear the floor creek in “The Bedroom” and can touch the paints he uses. It also gives a short history of Van Gogh and highlights several of his most impressive paintings. This is not only a book to be used at home, but also in the classroom. I am pursuing an elementary education degree and I plan on using this book in the classroom for it can be used very easily to generate an early interest in art. I give this book a thumbs up!

Vincent Life and Death of Van Gogh

The best film about Vincent Van Gogh is not one of the many biopics of the painter, but this stirring, ardent documentary. Forgoing a conventional biography’s and-then-he-cut-his-ear-off approach, the gifted Dutch-Australian director Paul Cox opts for pure evocation: he trails his camera through the places where Van Gogh walked, as though trying to dream his way into the artist’s mindset. Meanwhile, the beautiful voice of John Hurt reads from Vincent’s amazingly searching letters to his brother, Theo. (Hurt’s voice probably deserved an Oscar for this vocal-cord performance alone.) Van Gogh’s journey as struggling artist and tormented man of soul is thus made strangely direct–it will not only send you to see Vincent’s paintings but to locate a copy of his collected letters as well. Many film directors have grappled with this subject: Vincente Minnelli with Lust for Life, Robert Altman with Vincent & Theo, Maurice Pialat with Van Gogh. But the perpetually underappreciated Cox (Innocence) has trumped them with simplicity and sheer intensity of feeling. –Robert Horton
