Customer Review: The Spirit of a Great Artist
While Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, this compilation of his letters combined with a more in-depth study of his work has intensified my appreciation of him as both an artist and a person. I’ve always felt it was impossible to separate this particular artist from his work and reading his letters has led me to a better understanding of why this is. These letters beautifully capture his soul and spirit and reveal him as the caring, expressive and socially aware person that he was. The combination of strength of character and vulnerability expressed in these letters explain both the intensity and sensitivity of his work.

Murder in Amsterdam: The Death of Theo Van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerance
Customer Review: First rate, completely absorbing
A very well-written book that takes the murder of Theo Van Gogh as its starting point for considering wider issues of tolerance and cultural diverity. It’s written about the Netherlands but most of what the author says applies is highly relevent to other Western societies with significant Muslim minorities.

The old cliche of a “warts and all” portraint certainly applies to this book. The negative side of affluent Holland is certainly well detailed; the horrors of the largely Moroccan “dish cities” in Holland are vividly portrayed. Theo Van Gogh certainly doen’t emerge as a great hero from this book, in fact he seems pretty obnoxious. The Islamic radicals the author interviews are pretty scary, probably rather unbalanced. The author paints a colouful picture of Pim Fortuyn, and provides a persuaive analysis of his appeal.

The author gives no easy answers but certainly makes the reader think. highly recommended.

Customer Review: Tolerance … ?
I think its a overwhelmingly silly book. Incredibly Bias and shockingly prejudice. It makes for a very uncanny read.

It talks about Tolerance, even though Theo Van Gough openly insult Anything Islamic numerous times over and over again, getting more and more sadistic and provocative each time.

At the same time, the book talks about freedom of speech going too far, however seems to forget how old Theo took it too far on a number of occasions.

at the same time, book openly generalizes All Muslims, radical or non-radical, practicing and non-practicing and poor or rich.

Its shocking how big a bluffer the author is.

I could not help but think the book was a simple ploy to make money at the exploit of the media frenzy against the “non-western World”.

First published in 1981 as a series of articles in “Sojourners” magazine, The Selfless Way of Christ is Henri Nouwen at his best. Although the themes won’t be unfamiliar to readers of his books, his presentation of them here is succinct and eloquent. The van Gogh sketches that accompany the text are also beautiful and haunting. In The Selfless Way of Christ, Nouwen argues that the way of the Christian is the way of Christ: what he marvellously calls “downward mobility.” Just as Jesus self-emptied for the sake of others, practicing humility, nonviolence, nonjudgmentalism, and sacrificial love, so must those who call themselves his disciples. This is our vocation. But the culture in which we live tempts us, of course, with the path of “upward mobility.” Actually, this has always been a temptation in all civilizations. The scriptural story of Jesus’ three temptations speaks to it, and the second chapter of the book is Nouwen’s interpretation of the story. In his hands, the three temptations are the urge to be relevant, spectacular, and powerful. To follow the downward path and avoid the temptation of the upward one, Nouwen ends the book with a chapter on the disciplines of spiritual formation. He makes it clear that it’s the Holy Spirit that disciplines us, not our own efforts or will alone. The Holy Spirit works through the Church, through scripture, and through prayer. In the first we encounter the living Christ in time and space; in the second we encounter the incarnate presence of God in concrete terms; and in the third, we cultivate an inner openness or receptivity to God. Nouwen says that we’ll never be free of the tension between our vocation to downward, and our great temptation to upward, mobility. “But when we persevere with hope, courage, and confidence, we will come to fully realize in our innermost being that through the downward road of Christ we will enter with him into his glory” (p. 93). Well said indeed.

Customer Review: Adds even more heart to the life of Van Gogh
I read this book to my first grade class and almost burst into tears as I read it. This is the kind of book that was written specifically for lovers of art, namely that of the genius Van Gogh. It is not just a theory of a part of the artist’s life, it is a story of friendship and how we inspire each other to do our best. I love how Van Gogh’s works and style were slipped into the pages, and the voice of the character Jacques is touching and well-done.
Customer Review: A Wonderful Book About a Gifted Artist
This is a wonderful book about Vincent Van Gogh. It is beautifully illustrated and brings to life the story of “The Starry Night.” The relationship between the boy in the story and Vincent is that of beloved friends. Vincent’s insanity is never brought to the fore; however it is dealt with along with a subliminal message of compassion and tolerance. As an Art History teacher I have used this book on numerous occasions to introduce Van Gogh to children as young as Kindergarten and as old as 5th grade, with each level taking from it what they could. The illustrations in the book are exceptional. One can only be moved by Vincent painting in the darkness with a halo of starlight around his hat. Teaching Van Gogh to children is always a touchy subject. How do we separate the genius from the insanity? This book brings Vincent to a level of understanding that children can comprehend without ever mentioning his illnesses. It is a lovely, well-written story that introduces Van Gogh and one of his most famous paintings in a delightful manner.

Customer Review: A Little Slow
I watched the DVD but it did not hold my interest as much as I thought it would. The writings of Vincent were read throughout and that was fascinating but the cinematography seemed to be fragmented and although it attempted to show the countryside where Vincent lived and how this inspired him (colors, form, locals), the cut to his paintings was quick and didn’t give me enough opportunity to contemplate the beauty of his pieces. I still would recommend this DVD if you just want a look inside of Vincent’s mind as he unravels to a tragic end.
Customer Review: Forgettable
I am an Art History teacher and an avid admirer of Vincent Van Gogh. This pseudo-documentary is visually uninteresting and seems more home-made than professional. The actor reading the Van Gogh letters has an irritating voice and a monotonal delivery. The score is un-musical and aimless. I am sorry, but I do not recommend this video to anyone for any reason.
