Customer Review: WELL WRITTEN, WELL ILLUSTRATED AND VERY USEFUL.
This is the type of book that I do wish there were more of. I certainly am not going to go into plot, story-line, etc. here, as other reviewers have done so already and have accomplished it quite well. This story is based on a true encounter with the artist Vincent Van Gogh. This book is a wonderful tool to introduce children to the wonderful artist. It also has some wonderful lesson within it’s pages dealing with acceptance and tolerance of those who are just a bit different than ourselves. The author has done a wonderful job with the text and the illustrations fit perfectly and are very well executed. The story is told through the eyes of a small boy. I have read this to quite a number of classes of children and they have all enjoyed it, which, when you think about it, is a pretty good indorsement for any children’s book. This is certainly one you will want to add to your child’s library.
Customer Review: Beautiful book!
I bought this book for my 6-year-old son, albiet with a little hesitation as to whether or not he would be interested in something like this, since his passions seem to be more with Spiderman, Harry Potter, etc. However he absolutely loves this book! He asks me to read it to him almost every night. And tonight after we finished it, he asked me where we could go to see Van Gogh’s paintings in real life because “I really want to go and see them!” (Hmmm…this could be a good excuse to take a little vacation to Holland!) I am ordering several more of this book for him to give as birthday gifts to his friends and cousins.

Camille and the Sunflowers (Anholts Artists)
Customer Review: A great way to introduce children to art.
I think this is a wonderful way to introduce children to the paintings of Van Gogh through a gentle story of Van Gogh’s time in Camille’s town. All the illustrations are in a Van Gogh-esque style and the yellow fields, night sky, house and chair etc appear just in the background illustrations. In addition there are reproductions of some portraits and the famous sunflower painting. The story is quite sad as it reflects the true story where Van Gogh is not accepted by the people of the town, but his unhappiness is relatively implicit so my children (2&4) understand this as teasing rather than anything stronger, and at the end when Van Gogh leaves but they just assume he’s off to paint elsewhere. If you wanted to draw out lessons on being different, talk about great masters etc. this is a very good starting point.

A lovely book with excellent illustrations encorporating Van Gough’s own art work. This book gives a fictional view of Van Gough’s thoughts behind some of his most beautiful work. The book comes complete with lesson ideas for year 2, although I used the book with a reception class as we were looking at Van Gough’s sunflowers. It was a big hit as the children built up empathy with Van Gough and they produced brillant paintings themselves. It does not mention the ear!! and so is suitable for a primary age and is a fantastic teaching tool, and an easy to afford price!.

These night lights are proudly made from the finest quality medical glass, metal frames, and high resolution photographic transparencies.” (The one I got contained NO metal or glass, and the transparency was not that good. In fact, it is not even transparent; It is opaque.) The colors are different, and the unit is fairly flimsy. Certainly NOT what was advertised.

I fell in love with this book on first sight, my four-year-old son has taken a little longer but now he loves it too.

It is a beautiful book - consisting of six nicely reproduced Van Gogh pictures each one based on a different colour (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple).

It is wonderful to sit down with my son and explore the pictures and their themes. The text consists of some questions and observations but the text is just a starting point, there is huge scope for digression and discussion - very educational and great fun.

Unreservedly recommended.

I’ve immediately returned to this site after receiving this book and The Lanaguage Nursery; absolutely wonderful and amazingly (to me) have been around since the late 80s. Gentle ways to introduce great works (and some teenagers here at the time enoyed them to). I work with children of all ages and found the ‘Where would you put yourself in the picture’ type examples really inspirational and gentle. Great.
