VINCENT VAN GOGH by Royal Sanders - EDT SPRAY 1 oz for Men
Price: $15.00

The Essential: Vincent Van Gogh (Essential (Harry N. Abrams))
This pocket-sized book packs a lot of information, visual and textural, about one of the best-loved artists of the 20th century. One of the Essentials series, which also includes Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dali, and Edward Hopper, it comes off as a kind of art-world Cliff Notes, but beautifully and colorfully designed. The book purports to tell you everything you need to know to sound smart about Van Gogh. To that end, the text is pre-underlined (the key words and information are italicized, sometimes eccentrically, as in “Vincent was no virgin“); there are lists of bulleted phrases containing highlights of different aspects of Vincent’s short career; and “sound bytes”–pithy quotations–are highlighted by blue strips.

There is a reason why Vincent Van Gogh’s passionate story has been the subject of best-selling potboilers and Hollywood sagas. He sold only one picture during his wretched lifetime, he committed suicide at age 37, he was fervently religious and callously rude, and he cut off part of his ear. And the 20th-century auction prices for paintings like Irises (more than $50 million in 1987) have made front-page news around the world. This little book relates Vincent’s life, his anchoring relationship with his younger brother Theo (to whom he wrote 800 lucid and eloquent letters on art), and his painting. Unfortunately, author Ingrid Schaffner’s distorted, flip style (”Theo is not too thrilled,” that Vincent “hangs out in divey bars,” “Today Van Gogh would be seriously on Prozac“) might be offensive to readers of even moderate empathy or serious interest. But for an instant course in Van Gogh, this book is probably your best bet. –Peggy Moorman

Throughout his life, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) wrote hundreds of letters, many to his brother Theo. Theo acted as patron, agent, and sounding board to the artist whose life was fraught with poverty, a struggle for recognition, and alternating fits of madness and lucidity. Van Gogh also corresponded with other family members and fellow artists, including his dear friends Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. His letters, originally collected by Theo’s wife, Johanna, exhibit Van Gogh’s genius, his depth of observation, and his feelings in their most naked form.

In Vincent Van Gogh these letters have been excerpted, newly translated, and set side-by-side with more than 250 of his drawings and paintings. Van Gogh’s words and art illuminate each other and reveal a portrait of the artist as never seen before. The commentary of H. Anna Suh frames Van Gogh’s work and puts his art, letters, life, and struggles into rich context. The result is this timeless jewel of a collection, unlike any other Van Gogh book that has gone before.

Customer Review: Very nice
It is a pleasure to see Van Gogh’s original handwriting in his letters, accompanied by drawings and skecthes. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: A Super Van Gogh book
I was so pleased to find this book in the library and after readint it I had to own it. I have many Van Gogh books. This one is espeically interesting since the editor minimized her words on the first page of every chapter. The words after that are Van Gogh’s words taken from his letters to Theo and various others. I find it extremelly intersting to read what he wrote about his works as he did them. This is a terrific book.

The Letters of Vincent van Gogh (Penguin Classics)
This thorough collection of van Gogh’s letters has been assembled with an artful eye and sensitivity to the artist’s thinking. The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh’s epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him.

Customer Review: van Gogh: A Writer and Painter
To read Van Gogh’s letters is to come as close to sitting aside this world class artist as possible. I dare say, he wrote almost as good as he painted–his passion verily jumps off the page. In this addition, we are treated to an excellent selection of Van Gogh’s letters (mainly to his brother Theo) from each seminal period in his extraordinary life. In between the sections, the editor provides us with fascinating details into the travails of Van Gogh’s personal life. Alongside Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet, this collection is essential reading for all artists.
Customer Review: intimate look into the artistic process
this collection of van gogh’s letters to his brother Theo both captivated me and broke my heart. Such an intimate look into the vulnerability of the artistic soul. Those who appreciate the artistic process will love this collection of letters. You don’t need to be an admirer of Van Gogh’s to appreciate this; but you will walk away admiring the man behind the sunflowers.

Discover how artists work and share ideas

Living alone in the south of France, Vincent van Gogh missed the company of other painters. Hoping to attract artists to Arles, where he was staying, van Gogh invited Paul Gauguin to come live with him in his Yellow House. For two months, in the fall of 1888, the two men painted side by side.

However, the artists set about their work in very different ways. Vincent painted what he saw around him; Paul painted from his memory and imagination. Vincent painted quickly, while Paul often worked on canvases over a period of time.

The Yellow House, published in association with the Art Institute of Chicago, is a thought-provoking story about how artists generate and share ideas and how they work. Along with reproductions of actual paintings by van Gogh and Gauguin, the rich and lively illustrations by Jos. A. Smith bring to life the history of two artists at work.

Customer Review: Great except for potentially scary or inappropriate content
This is a picture book format story for children aged 4-8, about the time period when Paul Gaugin lived with Vincent van Gogh in Arles, France. Bright and lovely illustrations by Jos. A. Smith and reproductions of van Gogh and Gaugin’s works comprise the illustrations. There is not much coverage of the impressionists in general. If this is read as a first exposure to van Gogh, Gaugin, or impressionism, the child will be confused or not understanding. I feel this is a great accompaniment after the child knows something about the Impressionist movement, van Gogh, and Gaugin. The bright and lively illustrations really make this a special book. The story covers the time when van Gogh invited Gaugin to visit through their visit and then ending with a description of their pen pal relationship after Gaugin left Arles. The story explains the different painting methods they used, even when painting the same subject at the same time. The author explains their use of their favorite colors for backgrounds is shown and how van Gogh preferred to paint exactly what he saw while Gaugin preferred to paint from his imagination or from the content of his dreams. Their explosive relationship is discussed, including a fight that culminated in van Gogh cutting off part of his ear, which was the last straw for Gaugin, resulting in Gaugin’s departure. Depending on the sensitivity of the child, learning of this event this could be disturbing. At the back of the book is a one-page biography of each artist. I am not sure if this part was intended to be read to the child; within the van Gogh bio, it is explained that van Gogh suffered from strange moods since boyhood, then goes on to say that after the ear-cutting episode the townspeople “demanded he be locked up in a mental hospital” and goes on to say he did end up in a mental asylum. Whether you want to read this to your young child is up to you. I take issue with the idea of telling young children that townspeople can call for someone to be locked up and then knowing it came to fruition! There is also the question of how much information you want your young child to know, or how much can they understand, about depression, mental illness and the mental asylums of the 1800s. I am not calling for censorship or shaming of depression or mental illnesses, but I have issues with as to the appropriate age to venture into a discussion of mental illness, depression and self-mutilation. Other van Gogh biographies for children aged 4-8 have not included information about the ear-cutting or about the mental asylum visit, although adults seem to always be interested in this part of van Gogh’s life. If the book did not contain the ear-cutting incident in the main body of the story I’d rate this 5 stars; I’ll rate it 4 stars due to the content potentially being disturbing for children aged 4-8 which the publisher states this is appropriate for.
Customer Review: Meet Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin
During the fall of 1888, Vincent Van Gogh invited Paul Gauguin to come live and paint with him in the Yellow House in the south of France. “…he missed the company of other people, especially artists who could discuss painting. He hoped that warm, sunny Arles would attract fellow painters to join him. Together they would form a kind of family of artists, a Studio of the South.” Van Gogh and Gauguin were very different in both temperment and style. Van Gogh worked quickly, painting “exactly what he saw with his own eyes”, and often completed a painting in just one sitting. He “liked to load his brush with lots of paint and put it on the canvas in dots and dashes… Thick swirls of strong colors expressed his feelings-his love of nature, his joy in painting.” Gauguin worked very differently. He painted more slowly, blending his paints on a palette, and spreading the colors “smoothly in careful shapes.” He “painted pictures from his imagination-feelings, fantasies, and dreams.” Together they worked side by side for two months, discussing art and techniques, and learning much from each other. And even after Gauguin left Arles, they continued to encourage each other through their letters….. Based on actual events, Susan Goldman Rubin has written an elegant and compelling story about the relationship between these two great artists. Her eloquent text is straightforward and informative. But it’s Jos. A. Smith’s artwork that really makes this book stand out. His evocative illustrations dazzle as they compare and contrast Van Gogh’s and Gauguin’s styles, techniques, and use of color, and include reproductions of some of the paintings created during that two month period. With biographies at the end to fill in details about both painter’s lives and work, The Yellow House is an engaging, fact filled introduction, rich in history and drama, that is sure to intrigue young art lovers 5-10, and send them out looking for more

Vincent & Theo
The eternal struggle between madness and genius takes its toll on the brothers Van Gogh in this “luminous” (LA Weekly) masterpiece from Academy Award?-nominated* director Robert Altman. Tim Roth and Paul Rhys give “stupendous performances” (Rolling Stone) in the roles of tortured artist Vincent and his brother Theo in this “beautiful, disturbing and powerful film” (Screen) that is “as rich and tactile as a Van Gogh painting” (New York Post). In life, hewas impoverished, his work largely ignored; yet today, paintings by Vincent Van Gogh fetch millionsof dollars at auction. This supreme irony is laid bare in the passionate story of an obsessive artist driven by inexorable demons and his alternately devoted and despairing younger brother, who seemsunable to live with him or without him.*2001: Gosford Park; 1993: Short Cuts; 1992: The Player; 1975: Nashville; 1970: M*A*S*H

Customer Review: Realistic portrait
This movie about Vincent and Theo gives a more realistic account of the artist life. Also shows the difficult and often antagonistic relationship between the brothers. It coudn’t be any other way, Theo economically supported his brother while the world couldn’t recognize his amazing style. I enjoyed every minute of the movie, if you want to know more about Vincent, this movie is a must see.
Customer Review: Aimless
This movie is highly overrated. The only real drama occurs at the very beginning when one of the Sunflower paintings is being auctioned at Christie’s in London. It is downhill after that. LUST FOR LIFE is an old movie but at least there are competent actors, there is character development and it is visually interesting.

Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours

Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours
Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child’s curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you’ll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we’re taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh’s era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works.

On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There’s also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. –Paul Tonks

Customer Review: My 6 month old daughter is mesmerised by this DVD !!!
Excellent in all ways. My little darling is captivated by this DVD. The opening music excites her & she squeels in delight as the puppets appear. It’s educational as it teaches her colours & entertains her while I get on and do other things.

Customer Review: Brilliant in every way
My daughter has had this DVD since she was five months old, she is now ten months. I am a teacher and have to say this is a fantastic 20 minutes of fun. My daughter watches it most days while I make her supper and she is totally enthralled, she now predicts what is coming next and responds to all of the puppets and children. Worth every penny and not just a cartoon with no real educational benefits.

Customer Review: Love Them or Hate Them!
It appears that our first child (daughter) really does not enjoy these DVDS (yet). She is now about 9 months old. I must admit that I do find some of the visuals/music a bit irritating myself. Couple of points: 1) These DVDs might seem like a real bargain, but remember that each one is around 30mins long 2) I wish they had combined more of the 30mins DVDs together on one disc - especially if they combined them on the basis of suitable age - to save the hassle of having so many discs and needing to change them in the player 3) Like mentioned by another reviewer, it is a bit “American”. Overall, I do not regret buying them but I guess you cannot predict whether your little one will love them or hate them!

Customer Review: Excellent:))
This set is great value for many, as buying every DVD separately is just so expensive. And my son just loves watching it. Very usefull when you need a coffe brake or have some house work to do and don’t want to be disturbed. Even my friends kids that are much older love to watch them.

Customer Review: Van Gogh Lives…..
Young Bernard comes across an old and frail looking artist painting in New York’s Central Park, and is entranced. He sits in the grass and watches the man as the canvas is transformed into the dazzling reflecting pool and surrounding area. “The Big Apple never looked better!” As the painter packs his things, Bernard introduces himself. “Where are you going?” Bernard asked. “To find another place that asks to be painted.” And so Bernard joins him and takes Vincent all over New York City, to Harlem, the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Times Square, and Fifth Avenue… “Everywhere they went, Bernard watched as Vincent painted New York in bright and beautiful colors.” Finally it is time for Vincent to leave New York and move on. But before he goes, he takes Bernard to see something very special on the second floor of the Museum Of Modern Art….. Neil Waldman has written a marvelous and inspiring fantasy that takes youngsters on a “Van Gogh” adventure through New York City. Mr Waldman’s simple and gentle text takes a back seat to both his charming pen and ink story illustrations, and ingenious Van Gogh-styled, bold and bright New York scenes. Together word and art transports the reader on an evocative and entertaining journey with one of the great masters. Perfect for budding artists 4-8, The Starry Night is an engaging feast for the eyes; a portrait of the artist, his work and his unique style.
Customer Review: VAN GOGH IN NEW YORK CITY ??
In his childhood the author was excited by the color and power of Van Gogh’s paintings. In this book his painterly yearnings are poured into the character of a young New York boy. In Central Park Bernard encounters Van Gogh at his easel. He offers to show the painter some other ‘amazing places’. Many paintings later Van Gogh has a farewell surprise for his young friend. They visit the MOMA gallery on 53rd Street and see “THE STARRY NIGHT” hung there. When the artist disappears, Bernard determines to paint his own copy. The end papers of the book include some of the copies of the famous painting as imagined by the author-artist’s own students. The fantasy goes full circle as Neil Waldman’s striking paintings are shared in tnis book to benefit the Children’s Aid Society & N.Y.school children. Imaginations — not all young! — are fired up. Be sure to check all titles of Waldman, illustrator, and also read Joan Shaddox Isom’s “The FIRST Starry Night.”
