The history of a single work of art from conception, several owners, war, and fame as the record-holder for highest price for a painting at auction, this book is nothing short of amazing. Cynthia Saltzman’s concept is fresh and her writing ludcid. This is a book you won’t be able to put down. It has everything a good story should have; suspense, tragedy, triumph, and action. I found myself holding my breath, though I knew the outcome, as I read about the auction of the Portrait of Dr. Gachet. This is a book I heartily recommend, and so far, everyone I’ve leant it to or purchased it for has loved it just as much as I have.

This is a unique “story” or “history” of a work of art. It is one of the most inventive means, by giving the detailed history behind the provenance of the work, of telling a part of, not only art history, but of the times and circumstances in which the work of art exists. It makes the work of art become more than simply an object to be examined but a real and almost living part of the culture in which it exists. The writing is of the highest quality and makes you want to continue reading to find out what happens next to the painting. It is a wonderful book that I recommend without reservation. I’ve already bought an extra copy to pass around among my friends.

THE FIRST STARRY NIGHT provides a perfect introduction for children to the life and works of the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. Jacques sees past the rough exterior that Van Gogh portrays to others and recognizes the loneliness and longing for friendship within his heart. We often forget that in their innocence children recognize the inner needs of another individual in ways that we as adults do not. A child is much more accepting of the uniqueness of the individual, not focusing on the oddities or eccentricities. Joan Isom portrays a kind and caring side of Van Gogh not often displayed in other books, but a side that every child should and needs to see. The comparison of the stars to a good painting or a good story in their everlasting qualities is one that should be instilled in every child. The emphasis on the fact that we all see things differently and an appreciation for those differences is a lesson that I try to incorporate daily in the classroom. I think that we all long for a “brother of the heart” and that those of us who are fortunate enough to have found such a person are truly blessed. This book provides the inspiration to each of us to reach out to others and to the stars just as Vincent Van Gogh did on that “starry night” long ago.

Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours
Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child’s curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you’ll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we’re taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh’s era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works.

On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There’s also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. –Paul Tonks

My daughter has had this DVD since she was five months old, she is now ten months. I am a teacher and have to say this is a fantastic 20 minutes of fun. Customer Review: Just when you thought they couldn’t get better-they did.
After a four year interlude since Lo que te conte….. in 2003, La Oreja de Van Gogh have come back and they are on incredible form.If you lived thier previous albums you will LOVE ‘Guapa’. By using sucessful elements of thier highly acclaimed previous album ‘Lo que te conte…’aswell as new and innovative techniques La Oreja have created another masterpiece. Its the kind of album that if you liked thier previous works will grow on you fast after you’ve listened to each song several times. The best songs in my opinion are Dulce Locura, Manhattan, Perdida and Muneca de Trapo. Amaias voice is a breath of fresh air in a music world so often void of any real emotion. Innovative, startling, refreshing and 100% worth buying, if you love Spanish pop/rock then you will LOVE this album. They do not disappoint!

Customer Review: Great new album from Spain’s finest band
Once again La Oreja De Van Gogh have produced a top-notch album combining elements of everything that’s good about Spanish pop music. As with their other releases, the lyrics are great, the songs are very catchy and yet it doesn’t feel like the predictable Euro pop you may expect such a band to resemble. I don’t think it quite matches up to their previous album, “Lo Que Hac?a..” but that’s only because such a masterpiece was going to be virtually impossible to improve upon. They have, however, acquired a more mature sound without making any drastic changes, especially when compared with their first two albums. I find it too difficult to say which songs stand out because they are all great. It’s just a shame the band aren’t well known in the UK, because they are a hell of a lot better than most bands here.

Customer Review: A great way to introduce children to art.
I think this is a wonderful way to introduce children to the paintings of Van Gogh through a gentle story of Van Gogh’s time in Camille’s town. All the illustrations are in a Van Gogh-esque style and the yellow fields, night sky, house and chair etc appear just in the background illustrations. In addition there are reproductions of some portraits and the famous sunflower painting. The story is quite sad as it reflects the true story where Van Gogh is not accepted by the people of the town, but his unhappiness is relatively implicit so my children (2&4) understand this as teasing rather than anything stronger, and at the end when Van Gogh leaves but they just assume he’s off to paint elsewhere. If you wanted to draw out lessons on being different, talk about great masters etc. this is a very good starting point.

A lovely book with excellent illustrations encorporating Van Gough’s own art work. This book gives a fictional view of Van Gough’s thoughts behind some of his most beautiful work. The book comes complete with lesson ideas for year 2, although I used the book with a reception class as we were looking at Van Gough’s sunflowers. It was a big hit as the children built up empathy with Van Gough and they produced brillant paintings themselves. It does not mention the ear!! and so is suitable for a primary age and is a fantastic teaching tool, and an easy to afford price!.

Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida [Us Import]
Customer Review: Good quality pop music
On first listen, the album is very catchy, but comes across slightly cheesy. It sounds very European - it puts me in mind of Ace of Base, or even the Eurovision song contest - like pop music used to be, in this country, before R&B changed it beyond recognition. I think that’s why it sounds cheesy, because it is so white and so poppy. But despite myself I haven’t been able to stop listening to it, as it really is catchy! The lead singer’s voice is tremendous. The music is a peculiar mixture of rock-band arrangements and synthesized sound that seems to work. The songs are mostly cheerful. A couple of songs touch on a more angsty sound, with limited success due to the cheese factor reining it in again. Don’t expect anything deep and meaningful, but as far as “pop” music goes this is about as good as it gets.

When I bought “Dile Al Sol” I thought it had the most catchy and uplifting songs I’d heard in years but “Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida” is even better.I couldn’t tell you which song I like the most - the whole recording seems to be a unified masterpiece.Every member of this group has tremendous talent and every second of this cd is worth listning to.
