The Letters of Vincent van Gogh (Penguin Classics)

The Letters of Vincent van Gogh (Penguin Classics)
This thorough collection of van Gogh’s letters has been assembled with an artful eye and sensitivity to the artist’s thinking. The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh’s epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him.

Customer Review: intimate look into the artistic process
this collection of van gogh’s letters to his brother Theo both captivated me and broke my heart. Such an intimate look into the vulnerability of the artistic soul. Those who appreciate the artistic process will love this collection of letters. You don’t need to be an admirer of Van Gogh’s to appreciate this; but you will walk away admiring the man behind the sunflowers.

Customer Review: The greatest letters ever written by an artist
Van Gogh is a tremendously powerful letter- writer. In these letters mostly written to his brother we see a great , suffering , soul, a devoted artist tormented and striving. This may all sound like ‘cliche’ but Van Gogh is perhaps the most conspicuous example of the cliche of the suffering , rejected in- his- life artist who knows great recognition only after death.

Van Gogh is a person of great intelligence, and of a very strong conscience. There are no greater letters I think ever written by an artist. And while they may be filled with a troubled and agonized spirit they too have a great richness of feeling and appreciation of life.

I love this woman’s voice! Este CD estuvo excelente. Lo escucho cuando manejo al trabajo y me despierta y estoy bailando en el carro. Muy buen CD!
Customer Review: Another Great Collection from one of Spain’s best Pop/Rock Bands!
This album is stunning! The songs are once again, catchy, clever, literate, romantic and often funny. The arrangements on this album are even more elaborate and innovative than in their previous effort. I swear this band just keeps getting better! The vocal harmonies are as lovely as they have ever been; the lead singer’s voice is amazing, strong, beautiful and sexy! The Beatles influence is still there, and the songs are very well crafted, yet sound very different from the previous album. The first three singles are outstanding; “20 de Enero” (”20th January”), “Puedes Contar Conmigo” (”You Can Count On Me”) and “Rosas” (”Roses”), but the rest of the songs are just as good. This album (and its predecessor “El Viaje De Copperpot”) is one of those albums where every song is very very good. This one of the Best, if not THE BEST Spanish Pop/Rock Band in the world!! I refer to their music as “Pop/Rock” for two reasons; the “rock” more than most “pop” bands and their songs have a complex struture that reveals craftmanship. This is not your average pop band!! These guys and gal actually write their own songs and play instruments; they don’t just sing. This band is a real treat and a rarity amongst all the crap that passes for music in the Spanish Pop world today. I heard they just put out a new album. Can’t wait to hear it!!

Vincent Van Gogh: Sunflowers and Swirly Stars (Smart About Art)

Vincent Van Gogh: Sunflowers and Swirly Stars (Smart About Art)
“Brad” explores the ups and downs of van Gogh’s life and art in this colorful report, featuring Brad’s funny cartoons alongside reproductions of classic paintings like Starry Night.

Customer Review: The “Smart About…” series of books are wonderful
My 5, 6 and 8 yr old kids are entranced when I read them the Smart About Art books. After reading one, I came back to Amazon and ordered as many as I could.

They are written as a student would write a book report, but are humorous, touching and extremely informative with plenty of examples of the artists’ work. I attended Art School 20+ years ago and it was a refresher course for me as well. It includes background/personal info about the artist, but only as much as a child can comprehend and as it pertains to his art. These books have just the right amount of info on the artists and their work.

I wanted to share the world of art with my kids. Though my youngest two still use coloring books and my oldest reads chapter books without illustrations, these Smart About Art picture books are the perfect mix where they all can gain something from them–this series is neither too young nor too advanced.

After years of reading picture books, my kids often ask “can that really happen?” or “is that person real?” I wanted a break from the imaginative world of children’s lit and now I’m happy to finally answer “Yes, this person really existed, this really happened!” after reading the Smart About Art books.

Customer Review: Great intro to the artist
My five year old was so inspired reading this that she went to the basement and proceeded to make her own copies of his works. It is nice and simple, but with a decent amount of info and great pics.

Vincent Van Gogh, Painted with Words: The Letters to Emile Bernard

Vincent Van Gogh, Painted with Words: The Letters to Emile Bernard
This important, groundbreaking publication contains the illustrated letters between two great modern artists–Vincent van Gogh and ?mile Bernard. The original letters were previously in private hands and have not been seen for approximately seventy years. Here they are published in association with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and an exhibit at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. In addition to the letters, the book also includes paintings, photographs, and drawings by both artists, as well as works by artists of the period, such as Paul Gauguin and Jean-Fran?ois Millet. These letters, written between 1887 and 1889, are among the most important and relevant sources of insight into van Gogh’s life and art. They bridge the time when van Gogh was living and working in Paris, where he painted most of his self-portraits (mainly because he was unable to afford models), to the small town of Arles, in Provence. Here he adopted new types of compositions and developed new ideas about color–all of which he describes in detail in letters to his friend and fellow painter Bernard. Only a year later, in July 1890, van Gogh died, at the age of thirty-seven. The authors have carefully placed each letter in context of relevant events and have written authoritative commentaries on the content of the letters.

Customer Review: A life examined in a new light
As a writer, I found this book very much of a revelation. Why? Simply put, Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) was a prolific writer of letters. He wrote hundreds of brilliant letters to fellow artists, friends and his brother, Theo. Much of a persons character, thoughts, likes and dislikes, loves and hates, fears and loneliness can be found in letters. Both the darkness and the light of the soul come through in personal letters as they are often inner directed as much as directed to the receiver.

Many of these letters tell the story of life. They give us a glimpse of the ideas behind his art. They seem to prove that he was very much in his right mind and that he was not suffering from any sort of mental disability as some have thought.

The letters written to the French painter, Emile Bernard (1868-1941), who was twenty-years-old in 1888, are of great significance. In these, the artists share ideas when van Gogh was working in Arles in the South of France.

This is a very fine work. It’s interesting reading and seems to bring the characters to life.

Highly recommended.

Customer Review: A VOLUME TO BE READ, REREAD, AND TREASURED
A friend of many Impressionists, Vincent van Gogh stands alone among artists, beloved, admired and respected by millions. While many of his paintings are familiar to us, this beautiful volume offers insights into his thinking, his cretaive process, and his life. The letters presented herein were written between December 1887 and November 1889 to his younger friend and colleague, Emile Bernard. These epistles are priceless as they focus to a great extent on artistic questions and, at the same time reveal a man blessed with a unique style and plagued by doubts.

Letters in this volume are numbered from 1 to 22. Facsimiles of all are presented. With these we are privy to the artist’s apparent disregard for apostrophes and his cavalier use of capital letters. A joy and privilege to see the writing in his own script, complete with drawings and crossed out words.

Following the facsimiles one finds the letters printed in the original French along with transcriptions. Also included are generous full color reproductions of paintings by van Gogh and Bernard, many of which are discussed in the epistles as van Gogh both criticized and praised the younger artist. What comes through very clearly in the correspondence is the depth of friendship the two men shared.

Van Gogh’s last letter was written mere months before he took his own life.

Vincent van Gogh Painted with Words is a volume to be read, reread, studied, and treasured. It contributes immeasurably to our understanding of this troubled genius.

Highly recommended.

The Baby Einstein Company’s “video board books” were designed as music-focused developmental tools to stimulate babies’ brains (prompted by research proving that exposure to classical melodies can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory in youngsters). Now the company is expanding into other art forms, including color and art. The idea remains the same–taking bold, beautiful objects (toys, puppets, nature scenes) and setting them to fun renditions of classical music (their recordings are easily the best in the crowded field of child development). A new puppet–Vincent Van Goat–introduces the six primary colors and associates them with Van Gogh’s paintings–”The Starry Night” for blue, “Wheat Fields with Reaper” for yellow. The only misstep is the poetry written and read by creator Julie Aigner-Clark, which is strongly reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’s My Many Colored Days.

The company suggests the program is for toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4. Harsh sounds between segments–such as balloons popping and tires screeching–will draw the attention of youngsters but will probably render the video inappropriate for babes in arms. The video can be purchased by itself or with a beautifully produced 28-page book featuring Van Gogh’s paintings, screen shots from the video, and Clark’s poems. The combination set may be the best way to engage 3- and 4-year-olds’ interest; they can follow along in the text while watching the video. Music includes “The William Tell Overture,” “The Blue Danube,” “Bolero,” and Brahms’s “Lullaby.” The video also provides information on the cool toys seen in the ending “Toy Chest” segment. –Doug Thomas

My child at 4 months old watched this video on a trip to G-ma’s house (a 9 hour drive) Over that time he watched it 3 times (it’s about 20 minutes long). The first time through he would look at it and get excited occasionally but was not captivated. By the 3rd time he saw it, he was squealing with delight through the entire video.

This DVD is not a documentary on Impressionist art, the period, or the artists. It is simply a unique product that lets you display the world’s finest art on your TV with a classical music soundtrack. Nothing more, nothing less. Enjoy the art! -Chris Gordon
Customer Review: Not Worth The Money
It has been a few years since I last wrote any product review on Amazon, but this product has compelled me to write a negative review. First, if you expect an abundance of great modernist paintings that would fully exploit the HD grandness that is PDP or LCD TV, FORGET IT. There is ONLY 30 shots. Next, utilizing a DVD with 4.7gb worth of storage for 30 photos and respective music, which comes to 30 songs, WITHOUT any manual function that you can control the photo/song setup is pretty devasting for a product of this price (currently at twenty five USD). Even DVD movies costing this much has far more entertaining functions such as director’s cuts etc. Where was all that money invested into? Getting the rights to store those arts in to a DVD? And without any manual control possible for the user, all possibly using far less space available on a DVD. Kinda maks you wonder if this money was better spent elsewhere. All in all, not worth the money I paid. Better leave my LCD TV blank, until a better solution to use that space. May be photos of your family burned on a DVD may be a better choice that this.

Customer Review: Teacher’s friend
I use this DVD to introduce Vincent Van Gogh to my elementary students. This beautiful film holds their interest for a long period of time. An almost impossible task, as any teacher will tell you! This is a children’s drama, not a boring documentary. As such, I would classify it as historical fiction. Some of the film’s events are based on fact and some are fabricated. At any rate, the acting and cinematography are top notch. I only wish there were other dramatic films about artists by the same producer and of the same caliber. It also comes in VHS.

The best film about Vincent Van Gogh is not one of the many biopics of the painter, but this stirring, ardent documentary. Forgoing a conventional biography’s and-then-he-cut-his-ear-off approach, the gifted Dutch-Australian director Paul Cox opts for pure evocation: he trails his camera through the places where Van Gogh walked, as though trying to dream his way into the artist’s mindset. Meanwhile, the beautiful voice of John Hurt reads from Vincent’s amazingly searching letters to his brother, Theo. (Hurt’s voice probably deserved an Oscar for this vocal-cord performance alone.) Van Gogh’s journey as struggling artist and tormented man of soul is thus made strangely direct–it will not only send you to see Vincent’s paintings but to locate a copy of his collected letters as well. Many film directors have grappled with this subject: Vincente Minnelli with Lust for Life, Robert Altman with Vincent & Theo, Maurice Pialat with Van Gogh. But the perpetually underappreciated Cox (Innocence) has trumped them with simplicity and sheer intensity of feeling. –Robert Horton

Customer Review: Forgettable
I am an Art History teacher and an avid admirer of Vincent Van Gogh. This pseudo-documentary is visually uninteresting and seems more home-made than professional. The actor reading the Van Gogh letters has an irritating voice and a monotonal delivery. The score is un-musical and aimless. I am sorry, but I do not recommend this video to anyone for any reason.
Customer Review: Vincent
Documentarian Cox’s deceptively simple approach to penetrating the enigma of Vincent Van Gogh scores a direct hit. British actor Hurt’s weathered but still rich voice expertly conveys the artist’s building anguish without our needing facial expressions to pay it off. And Cox’s wildly imaginative mix of imagery which accompanies Hurt’s recitations help elevate this piece well above the standard run of PBS-type documentary work. “Vincent” is an absolute must for all us art-lovers.

Vincent Van Gogh: A Self-Portrait in Art and Letters

Vincent Van Gogh: A Self-Portrait in Art and Letters
Throughout his life, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) wrote hundreds of letters, many to his brother Theo. Theo acted as patron, agent, and sounding board to the artist whose life was fraught with poverty, a struggle for recognition, and alternating fits of madness and lucidity. Van Gogh also corresponded with other family members and fellow artists, including his dear friends Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. His letters, originally collected by Theo’s wife, Johanna, exhibit Van Gogh’s genius, his depth of observation, and his feelings in their most naked form.

In Vincent Van Gogh these letters have been excerpted, newly translated, and set side-by-side with more than 250 of his drawings and paintings. Van Gogh’s words and art illuminate each other and reveal a portrait of the artist as never seen before. The commentary of H. Anna Suh frames Van Gogh’s work and puts his art, letters, life, and struggles into rich context. The result is this timeless jewel of a collection, unlike any other Van Gogh book that has gone before.

Customer Review: Very nice
It is a pleasure to see Van Gogh’s original handwriting in his letters, accompanied by drawings and skecthes. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: A Super Van Gogh book
I was so pleased to find this book in the library and after readint it I had to own it. I have many Van Gogh books. This one is espeically interesting since the editor minimized her words on the first page of every chapter. The words after that are Van Gogh’s words taken from his letters to Theo and various others. I find it extremelly intersting to read what he wrote about his works as he did them. This is a terrific book.

Customer Review: Introduces kids to the art world
My 5 yo still loves this book! It introduces children to the beauty of Van Gogh’s paintings and teaches them to look for color variations in the paintings. I think it’s great, because there are many shades of each color, and this book goes beyond the typical colors of the rainbow. It teaches children to recognize the various hues & values of color. Also, I love the quotes by Van Gogh. If you love and appreciate this artist, you will love sharing this book with your children. If you want a basic book about color try, What Makes a Rainbow? Each page has colored ribbon, which completes a rainbow at the end. It’s a fun book!

A White Knuckled Thriller Based on Actual Events

A dangerous game of cat and mouse has set into motion a chain of events that reveal a political conspiracy in the death of controversial Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn. Jim de Booy, a tabloid journalist, stumbles into an investigation that puts his life and the lives of friends and family at risk as he races to bring the truth to light. Based upon the book by Tomas Ross.

“A political thriller shot in a flashy, frenetic fashion reminiscent of Michael Mann’s TV cop dramas.” - The Guardian

van Gogh’s dramatic recreation is remarkably even-handed: a daring, white-knuckled thriller” - Toronto International Film Festival

Customer Review: Essential to understand violence (including including Islamofascist terrorism) in European politics
This is an essential DVD for anyone who wants to understand the pressures of violence (including Islamofascist terrorism) on European politics. As time fades, fewer Americans remember the assassination of Pym Fortuyn during the Dutch election cycle of 2002. (Fortuyn is often described as a right-wing politician, but the facts that he was openly gay and that his concern was for the well-being of Dutch society seem to show the lie regarding his actual position on the political spectrum. Only if you make the assumption that his questioning of the Netherlands’ very liberal immigration policy would rouse nationalist fervor against all Arab/Moslem immigrants can you call him right wing - he thought that more controls were needed to not give haven to Islamic terrorists.) More of us remember the assassination of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh which occurred in broad daylight while this film was being prepared for distribution. This DVD includes van Gogh’s film about Fortuyn’s murder, Theo’s personal video diaries during the filming and post-production period, and a Dutch TV documentary one year later dealing with Theo’s assassination and the lack of action by the police before, during, & after his murder. Interestingly, the same ineptitude/possible complicity of the Dutch autorities can be seen in both the film and the documentary. One even could wonder whether the assassinations of Fortuyn & van Gogh were orchestrated by the same group of politically connected persons in the police forces… As a political junkie of an international stripe, I found this entire presentation captivating.
Customer Review: Excellent, almost…
The film was excellent and riveting up to the resolution, which was weak. I assumed someone else gave it a final edit after Van Gogh’s murder, maybe not. In either the case, the end wasd too 60ish. But, overall, well worth the seeing.
